Prepare ye for Death
Because Hartford's ministers were all ill at the time of the explosion, a visiting minister, Rev. John Devotion of Saybrook, preached a sermon about the incident. It was entitled "The Necessity of a constant Readiness for Death" based on a passage from the biblical Book of Luke and presented at the North Meeting House (now Center Church in Hartford) on 25 May 1766. Printer Thomas Green later printed the sermon and sold copies "at the Heart and Crown, opposite the State-House" and near the site of the explosion. The Heart and Crown symbol can still be found on the masthead of the Hartford Courant to this day.
The entire printed sermon is available in the files below.
